Employer Sponsored Training
ESTP is an exciting and innovative program to establish a direct employment pathway for current and transitioning service members (Active, Guard & Reserve) and recently (within 180 days) transitioned veterans. ESTP is designed to secure high-quality, skills-based training in the operation of commercial vehicles leading to immediate employment with Werner Enterprises.
Military Skills Test Waiver
The Military Skills Test Waiver allows service members who are currently licensed and who are or were employed within the past year (12 months) in a military motor vehicle equivalent to a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) to apply for a Class-A Commercial Driver License (CDL-A) taking only the written exam as no skills testing is required.
**Please ensure you check with your State DMV for current Military Skills Test Waiver Form**
Werner Enterprises developed and introduced the industry’s first Truck Driver Apprenticeship Program registered by the Department of Labor and approved by the VA in April 2006.
The Truck Driver Apprenticeship Program allows you to earn credit for the training and proficiency you will gain with Werner Enterprises. Some of these skills include pre-, post- and Department of Transportation inspections, decision-making and driving skills during inclement weather, customer relations, as well as computer-based and classroom instruction. This program is open to drivers with less than 24-months experience. Once completing the program, apprentices will earn a certificate from the Department of Labor which can be transferred to college credits at participating schools. Those who are eligible to receive VA educational benefits can earn up to $23,714.40 in tax-free benefits on top of their Werner pay.
Werner also offers the industry’s first Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship Program registered by the Department of Labor and approved by the VA in June 2015.
The 3-year Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship Program allows apprentices to gain the knowledge and skills needed to perform as a heavy truck diesel technician on the newest truck technology in the industry, as well as earn all current technician certifications. Once completing the program, apprentices will earn a certificate from the Department of Labor which can be transferred to college credits at participating schools. Those who are eligible to receive VA educational benefits can earn up to $30,083.40 in tax-free benefits on top of their Werner pay. In addition, Werner also offers a tool purchase program for those who need it that features no interest and reasonable payments.
Introduced in August 2013, this program reimburses military members, veterans, military/veteran spouses, and military/veteran dependents who use VA educational benefits to pay for truck driving school as first-time student drivers.
Payments are $250 a month, paid directly to the beneficiary. Total amount of payments will not exceed $15,000.
Elite Veteran Driver Program
The Operation Freedom Fleet is comprised of eight military-themed trucks used to honor, recruit, and retain military members, veterans and military/veteran spouses. Each truck is currently being driven by veteran employees. These drivers have attended over 800 events in 2016 while still hauling freight. In September 2016, Freedom VI hauled the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund "The Wall that Heals," for which Werner Enterprises is a Commemorative Partner, for two weeks through the Ohio Valley. These trucks have received multiple awards and accolades from truck shows and military organizations. The pride that each driver feels being a part of this elite fleet and paying honor and respect to the military community is their biggest reward.
USERRA - The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 prohibits employers from discriminating against any employee or prospective employee because of past, present, or future application for, or membership in, a uniformed service.
USERRA is intended to minimize the disadvantages to an individual that occur when that person needs to be absent from his or her civilian employment to serve in this country's uniformed services and also to provide retention of reemployment rights.
