Werner has hired more than 25,000 veterans since April 2006 and more than 600 veteran spouses since May 2013. Werner's industry-first Department of Labor Truck Driver Apprenticeship Program has enrolled over 35,000 drivers. In 2016, 2 military veterans driving for Werner Enterprises won the 2016 TCA Rookie of the Year and the 2016 Driving for Excellence Top Military Rookie of the Year awards.
Approved by the DOL and VA in April 2006, Werner established the very first apprenticeship program in our industry that focuses on the recruitment of veterans to serve as professional drivers.
In this program, eligible veterans who have the Post 9/11 GI Bill can receive up to $24,420 of their tax-free education benefits while working at Werner, in addition to their Werner pay.
Werner also offers an industry-first apprenticeship program for diesel technicians, a three-year program that also is eligible for Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits.
Through this apprenticeship, students gain the knowledge and skills needed to perform as a heavy truck diesel technician on the newest truck technology in the industry, as well as earn all current technician certifications. In addition, Werner also offers a tool purchase program for those who need it that features no interest and reasonable payments.
Military Skills Transition Program
Veterans with experience operating heavy equipment in the service may be able to obtain their CDL through the Military Skills Test Waiver.
Eligible veterans can receive 12-months experience credited to their pay grade and begin their career as a professional driver through a 24-month paid apprenticeship program while receiving $750 per week of on-the-job training.
Veteran Tuition Reimbursement Program
Introduced in August 2013, this program allows veterans who are first-time student drivers to use their GI Bill benefits to pay for their truck driving school.
Eligible veterans can receive $250 payments each month, which is paid directly to the veteran (with the total amount of payments not exceeding $15,000).
The Operation Freedom Fleet is comprised of six military-themed trucks used to honor, recruit, and retain military members, veterans and military/veteran spouses. Each truck is currently being driven by veteran employees. These drivers have attended over 800 events in 2016 while still hauling freight. Freedom VI is currently driven by Dave Conkling who is a US Army veteran. In September 2016, Freedom VI and Conkling hauled the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund "The Wall that Heals," for which Werner Enterprises is a Commemorative Partner, for two weeks through the Ohio Valley. Freedom VII is a guard and reserve themed truck that was unveiled this year and is driven by JW Ray, a US Army veteran. The trucks have received multiple awards and accolades from truck shows and military organizations. Most recently, Freedom VII took first place in the Working Bobtail Division at the Great American Truck show in Dallas, Texas. However, the pride that each driver feels being a part of this elite fleet and paying honor and respect to the military community is their biggest reward.
